The Tesco van broke down after only two miles of halting, slow progress along the motorway, and refused to start again. Renton swore and pounded the steering wheel whilst Daniel and Emily sat in silence. Daniel knew Renton’s temper, knew what he was capable of when he was angry. Best just to keep quiet and as still as possible, and hope that he exhausted himself quickly.

The sky was growing dark, night falling upon them faster than Daniel had ever experienced before. Then, when the first few large drops of rain hit the filthy windscreen, he realised why. The sky had become thick with black, heavy clouds.

More of the heavy rain drops splattered across the glass and hit the van’s roof. A moment later and the rain had turned into a deluge, pounding out a rhythm on the roof and obscuring their view out of the windscreen.

Renton, breathing heavily from the exertion of his furious pounding at the dashboard and steering wheel, turned to face Daniel and Emily.

“We’ll stay here tonight,” he said. “Start walking again in the morning, when it’s dry.”

Daniel swallowed and nodded.

The wind was picking up, rocking the van. The teenage boy didn’t relish the prospect of spending a night cooped up with Renton and his festering, charred flesh again.

“I told you, we shouldn’t have left,” Emily said. She was sitting and staring straight ahead out of the van’s windscreen, in between Renton and Daniel.

“What did you say?” Renton growled.

Please don’t, Daniel thought. Just keep your mouth shut, please!

“We should have stayed where we were,” Emily replied, still not looking at Renton. “We were safe there, we had food and water.”

“What about the rats?” Renton said.

“They would have gone, eventually. We should go back. I should go back.”

“Do what you want,” Renton growled. “It makes no difference to me.”

Emily reached across Daniel’s lap for the door handle. He grabbed her hand and stopped her.

“You can’t go out in this,” he said. “It’s too dangerous and, and, you’ll get soaked.”

“I don’t care,” Emily said. “Let go of me.”

Daniel held on for another second, unwilling to let go. Finally he loosened his grip and Emily twisted her wrist out of his hand.

She pulled at the door handle and the door swung open.

Emily screamed.

“Hey, Dave, come and look at what I found!” shouted the man standing outside the van, a dark rain slicker pulled over his head and running with water.

He was holding a gun, pointing it at the occupants of the van.

Dave walked into view, a torch in one hand and a pistol in the other.

“Sweet,” he said.
